Best Lactation Cookie Recipe! (AND Dairy Free)

Lactation Cookies

Like so many others, I crave cookies! I’ll blame it on the fact that I’m really tired and instead of caffeine my body is using sugar to keep going. SO…to cure my sweet tooth and help my milk production, I whip these up and have them handy. This is a great recipe for dairy free moms and for moms wanting to boost their milk supply!

Ingredients:

1cup butter flavored shortening (OR butter (softened)
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flaxseed meal
4 tablespoons of water
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 heaping teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons brewer’s yeast
3 cup rolled oats

Options:
1 cup chocolate chips OR nuts OR dried cranberries

In 6 East Steps!
1. Soak the flaxseed in the water for a few minutes to soften.
2. In large bowl, beat eggs. Add shortening and sugar, then the flaxseed and vanilla to bowl.
3. Mix dry ingredients in separate bowl and then add to dry ingredients. (OR I just sprinkle dry ingredients evenly over wet mixture and mix!)
4. Add any options to the mix!
5. Drop on cookie sheet.
6. Bake 8 – 12 minutes at 375º

Can I substitute coconut oil for the shortening/butter? If so, would it be a 1:1 ratio?

Hi Mandy! Yes it would be a 1:1 ratio. Hope you like the recipe!!

Do these really help milk supply????

        • Amanda on September 20, 2016 at 7:52 pm

Hi Melissa! Definitely be cautious of any one thing being the magical trick to increasing your milk supply. What I can tell you from my personal and recent experience is that I had low milk supply with my daughter. I felt we were able to maintain her weight growth and demand because I focused a lot on what I was eating and drinking. I would have Mother’s Milk Tea and oatmeal with brewers yeast for the morning, high amounts of protein, a ton of water throughout the day and then I would treat myself to a few of these cookies too. I don’t know if it was one thing or a combination of things but I felt this time around my supply was better than the first time with my son. It’s the combination of oatmeal, brewers yeast and flax seed in these cookies that are suppose to be helpful for milk production. To get more information on milk supply here’s a great resource from Kelly Mom that you might like.

Does that mean the same amount of coconut oil as shortening ?

      • Amanda Alva on May 6, 2015 at 9:27 am

        Hi!

I would test it out. Start with your first batch measuring the full amount it calls for shortening, so 1 cup coconut oil. Depending on how they turn out maybe next time cut back a little to 3/4 cup coconut oil. Some sources online say you can convert the exact same amount for each but other sources say if the recipe calls for 1 cup shortening you only need 3/4 cup coconut oil. So it can depend on the recipe but since this recipe has a lot of dry ingredients you should be ok using the full amount of coconut oil.

For the flaxseed, do you add the water it’s soaked in as well as the flaxseed meal? Or do you drain it first?

    • Amanda Alva on May 8, 2015 at 10:27 am

I drained the water first. I wasn’t too big of a stickler if some water got into the recipe because it’s not a lot of water and it’s a semi-thick cookie dough so don’t worry to much about how much you drain it.

Thanks! I’m going to go make some cookies now! 🙂

Hello! Interested in trying these to increase milk production. Is it the brewer’s yeast that does it? Interesting…!! It doesn’t seem like a lot, so how many cookies do you feel like you need to eat to notice a difference in supply? And do you notice a difference right away? (I know every body is different, but just curious how it works for those who have tried it!) Thanks!!
